Create a virtual city9/2/2023 Since Everett city planners saw potential in this area, they connected with Bilmes and her students. “Now they’re facing a larger, more complex problem of how to redevelop and reclaim this land.” “Everett has the problem of land contaminated through the operation of the current owner,” Bilmes explained. The parcel was almost sold before investors discovered the land contamination was worse than they previously thought. In 2021 it became available for sale for development. The unused 95-acre parcel is privately owned by an oil company. Using virtual reality to demonstrate the possibilities for the land was a forward-thinking approach, one that gave city planners a better understanding of how to move forward. The Everett project centered on a large, abandoned piece of property located in a lower-income part of town contaminated with residue from a fossil fuel facility. “Using virtual reality headsets took the experience one step further, allowing city planners to actually see themselves coming out of buildings, interacting with the area.”īilmes, the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Senior Lecturer in Public Policy, was reflecting on the innovative technique used by her students with Everett, Massachusetts, Mayor Carlo DeMaria and his staff in their final presentation for MLD-412: “Greater Boston Applied Field Lab: Advanced Budgeting, Financial Management and Operations.” Projects for the lab typically focus on finance-related urban challenges and are funded through the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston and the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative. “I’ve been doing urban planning studies for more than 15 years at HKS, over 100 projects,” said Linda Bilmes, speaking of the field labs that give her students the opportunity to analyze real-world issues and offer solutions. Pink and purple trees9/2/2023 ![]() Fuji, Ukon, and Shogetsu are some of our favorites. The only problem with Japanese cherry trees is choosing the best variety, as several noteworthy Japanese cherry tree cultivars exist. Japanese cherry trees are famous for their Japanese, Chinese, and South Korean origin. It’s medium-sized, and its mature height can reach 25 feet high. The Japanese cherry tree – or the cherry blossom tree! The Japanese cherry tree offers spectacular violet colors in the springtime. Here’s one of the most famous trees with purple flowers. It’s best grown in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9 and prefers full sun and well-drained soil. The foliage will turn golden yellow in the fall, creating an eye-catching contrast against the deep purple flowers. This deciduous tree grows up to 30 feet tall and blooms with clusters of pink or lavender-purple flowers each April. The Eastern redbud tree is an excellent floral choice if you want to add color to your garden in early spring. Eastern redbuds are also Oklahoma’s state tree! You may notice that the leaves look like hearts. Even though redbud trees are relatively short, their leaves are massive! Redbud tree leaves grow to approximately three to five inches wide. You might see Eastern redbud trees with canopies broader than they are tall. They also have beautiful, dense branches and are popular understory trees. These are slow-growing beeches and make excellent specimen trees.Eastern redbuds are medium-sized and pretty-looking deciduous trees or shrubs that grow to around 20 to 30 feet. This purple tree can grow to 40 feet (12 m.) tall and shrugs off poor soil and city pollution.Ī second good option is a purple leafed European beech tree ( Fagus sylvatica cultivars). ‘Crimson King’ Norway maple ( Acer platanoides ‘Crimson King’) is a popular and well-known tree with purple-crimson leaves that retain this rich color through the summer. ![]() ![]() The ‘Royal Purple’ smoke tree ( Cotinus coggygria ‘Royal Purple’) also offers bright purple leaves, and it has the additional attraction of unusual, feathery flower clusters, also in shades of purple. The foliage hue shifts to dark, green-purple by fall. When the leaves emerge, they are a lovely shade of royal purple. The pink spring blossoms appear on bare branches. For a smaller purple Japanese maple, ‘Crimson Queen’ tops out at about 8 feet (2 m.).Īnother excellent choice is the ‘Forest Pansy’ cultivar of redbud ( Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’). With hundreds of cultivars on the market, more than a few offer purple leaves all season long, like ‘Bloodgood.’ It grows slowly to between 15 and 25 feet (5-8 m.) tall. That is the Japanese maple ( Acer palmatum), a showy little maple tree species with lacy, deeply lobed leaves. When it comes to small, purple leafed trees, one species stands out. Today you will be able to select small, medium, or tall trees in a wide range of shades of purple, from lavender to almost black. The interest in different types of purple trees has helped to increase the choices available in commerce. Purple foliage trees are popular and provide a lovely contrast to smaller trees or shrubs with lighter or variegated leaves. Trees with bright foliage in colors other than green add interest and complexity to a landscape. If you are considering planting a tree with purple foliage, read on for a few of our favorites. Purple leaf trees, for example, add a pow to a landscape all season long. However, many gardeners these days are opting for rich foliage in unusual shades rather than pretty flowers. The blossoms provide a short but beautiful show. If you’ve grown ornamental trees in the past with a view to their flowers, you aren’t alone.

Best small projector 20159/2/2023 As it is, the daisy chain of cables going from Lightning to MHL is a bit kludgy, but perfectly workable. The PicoPro would be kickass with Apple’s streaming technology. Celluon also offers the PicoAir, a wireless-only model (Miracast/DLNA), which is available for $299. (Celluon included one with our review unit.) For Android and Windows Phone users, the PicoPro offers a wireless connection via Miracast and DLNA, a pair of streaming technologies that mimic Apple’s AirPlay. For use with an iOS device, this cable must be plugged into Apple’s Lightning Digital AV Adapter, which is sold separately for $44. It comes with an HDMI-to-MHL (Mobile High-definition Link) cable. We got about three hours out of the battery Celluon claims battery life is between 2.5-hours (Wi-Fi) and 3.5 hours (HDMI). ![]() The PicoPro measures just 6 inches by 3 inches by 0.5 inches, and weighs just 6.7 ounces (189.9 grams). We’d have to back out onto the patio to get enough distance to project anything that big. Unfortunately, our house isn’t big enough to get an image that size. The company says projected images are watchable up to 250 inches, or five times the size of our living room flatscreen TV. The resolution is 1920 x 720p (16:9 aspect ratio) - yeah, we know this is weird. Rival LED projectors are closer to 2,000 to 1. Celluon claims the PicoPro has an incredible 80,000-to-1 contrast ratio. Most other pico projectors are LED-based, and are noticeably dimmer, fuzzier and lower contrast. The PicoPro’s secret is that it’s powered by three lasers - red, green and blue. Dimming the lights would obviously help, but in a lot of situations it wouldn’t be necessary.Īt home, in the Kahney family’s darkened living room, it served as a great little home entertainment projector, throwing up a perfectly bright and watchable image that measured at least 100 inches. We’d have little trouble giving Keynote or PowerPoint presentations in full daylight. ![]() Here at the Cult of Mac offices, which are bright and sunny, the projector threw a perfectly clear and readable image up onto the bright white walls. Like most pico projectors, it’s designed for on-the-road presentations rather than home entertainment. It’s a great little portable projector that goes way beyond my expectations.īuilt by Celluon, a Korean company best known for laser keyboards ( like this R2-D2 model), the PicoPro was announced at CES 2015 last month and is just starting to hit store shelves. It’s battery-powered and silent, dead-simple to use, and can be slipped into a jacket pocket. Photo: Jim Merithew/Cult of MacĬonnected to my iPhone 6 Plus (it’s about the same size, though twice as thick), the laser-driven PicoPro is capable of throwing a big, bright, razor-sharp picture on the wall in full 720p HD glory. Redshift amazon pricing9/2/2023 Both Redshift and RDS allows the customers to scale as per their budget and performance requirements. The ability to scale is one of the most critical factors to consider when making a choice between different databases. Let’s compare these managed services considering the most critical factors based on which a data architect will choose one of these. We have now covered the basics of AWS Relational database service and Redshift. A detailed review of Redshift and its architecture can be found in one of our previous blogs here. Redshift is mainly optimized for large complex analytical workloads spanning across millions of rows, but can also support OLTP workloads if necessary though it is not the recommended practice. Like RDS, Redshift pricing is also including storage and compute resources and customers can choose to pay only for what they use. Except for some administration queries, nothing gets executed on the leader node and the real work is delegated to member nodes. Among the nodes, one of the nodes is designated as a leader node and this node is responsible for client communication, query optimization, execution plan creation, and sending tasks to individual nodes for execution. Scaling is accomplished by upgrading the nodes, adding more nodes or both. Redshift manages this optimum mix of scalability and performance through a cluster-based architecture with multiple nodes. Nevertheless, all the administrative tasks are automated here as well and customers can focus only on their core business logic. While for older generation instances that do not support elastic resize, scaling can only happen in a few hours. Scaling in the case of newer generation instances can happen in a matter of minutes using the elastic resize feature. Redshift allows the customers to choose from different types of instances optimized for performance or storage. The querying engine is PostgreSQL complaint with small differences in data types and the data structure is columnar. Redshift is a completely managed data warehouse as a service and can scale up to petabytes of data while offering lightning-fast querying performance. Key Features of AWS Redshift Image Source Storage scaling will depend on the type of database engine that is being used and the maximum it can go up is up to 64 TB for AWS Aurora database engine. The scaling normally takes a few minutes and it can go up to a maximum capacity of 32 vCPUs and 244GB of RAM. There is no concept of cluster or nodes when it comes to RDS and these individual virtualized instances can be scaled for performance or storage with just a few clicks. This means a replica of your database is automatically maintained in another region and AWS will manage a completely seamless switch in the unfortunate case of something going wrong with your database.Īrchitecturally, RDS works on top of virtualized instances. AWS also offers a high availability option in the form of multiAZ deployment. The full suite of security and compliance comes built-in with RDS along with encryption. ![]() are completely automated and the customers can focus only on their mission-critical business logic. All the typical administrative tasks related to running a database – Hardware provisioning, database setup, patching updates, backing up data, etc. ![]() Customers can also choose between different types of hardware through AWS instance types – optimized for performance, memory or IO. It allows a customer to choose from six different database engines – MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, AWS Aurora, Oracle Database, and SQL Server. ![]() Understanding Redshift and RDS Key Features of AWS RDS Image SourceĪWS RDS offers a fully managed relational database as a service. Towards the end, we also in detail mention under what circumstances/use cases you should opt for one of these two. ![]() In this blog, we will compare two of the most popular databases as a service from Amazon – AWS Redshift vs RDS, to see how they stack up to each other. Door lock set9/1/2023 Storeroom locks are used when the outside lever should be locked at all times. Operating inside lever, closing door or operating outside emergency release unlocks outside lever. Latch bolt operated by lever from either side except when outside lever is locked by inside turn or button. Some privacy functions may also incorporate an indicator to show the locked/unlocked status of the lock. There are several variations on this function, including a hospital privacy which has a thumbturn on both the inside and outside to allow hospital staff quick access to the bathroom. They can be locked from the inside with a thumbturn or push button/turn for privacy, and they are typically unlocked from the outside using a tool rather than a key. Privacy sets are used for restrooms or dressing rooms. Latch bolt operated by lever from either side at all times. There is no key cylinder and no means to lock a passage set. Passage sets are used where doors do not need to lock. Please note that all of these functions allow free egress at all times. The most common functions for mechanical locks are described below. Add in a few deadbolt functions, and a basic understanding of electromechanical locks, and you’ve got the most common lock functions mastered! If a project requires a different lock function, our spec writers can help you decide which one to use. Luckily, there are 6 mechanical lock functions that account for the vast majority of locks specified. In fact, when I was teaching our spec writer apprentices a few weeks ago I said, “Don’t ask the architect if he or she wants a storeroom function lock, ask if the door should always require a key to enter.” A manufacturer’s catalog may show 50 different lock functions (or more!) and it’s difficult or impossible to remember how each function works. The topic of lock functions seems to arise at almost all of those meetings–usually someone in the room needs a refresher on how the basic functions work. Back-to-basics: Lock functions When a hardware consultant writes a specification, it’s common practice to sit down and discuss the project with the architect, at least for the more complicated jobs.

Best margarita recipe frozen9/1/2023 ![]() The drinks have the best texture and come so so close to restaurant-quality drinks. Now, the best option is the Margaritaville Machines. The best option is the Ninja Bullet because it crushes ice and makes a nice single-serve option, instead of making a full pitcher of margaritas. The Ninja Blenders ( click here to shop) offers power and are more reasonably priced. These are, in my opinion, a step up from the kitchen blender. ( click here to see the amazing choices) or a Vitamix ( click here to shop). It crushes ice and makes great smoothies. My two recommendations are the KitchenAid K150 series. If you are going the blender route, consider upgrading to a good blender. I can’t seem to figure out how not to have chunks of ice in my drinks. But, most blenders won’t create the restaurant-quality drink you are looking for. Drink Maker Options Kitchen Blenderįirst off, you have your ordinary kitchen blender. This means we may earn a small commission – at no charge to you – if you choose to click and buy. Simply multiply the recipe by the number of servings. There are affiliate links in this post. Depending on the size of your blender, you can probably make 2 – 6 of these at a time. My basic frozen Tommy’s Margarita recipe is: 2 oz tequila, 1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice, and 3/4 oz agave syrup (or 1 1/4 – 1 1/2 oz simple syrup), blended with 1 cup of crushed ice. Agave syrup tends to be about the same level of sweetness as rich simple syrup, so you’ll want to use twice as much simple syrup. ![]() You could also use simple syrup if you don’t have any agave syrup. Tommy’s Margarita is a mix of tequila, lime, and agave syrup. Yes! This would be more of a frozen Tommy’s Margarita. Can I make a frozen Margarita without triple sec? You can then easily measure out 1 cup measures for your frozen Margaritas. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just broken into smaller, easy to crush pieces. Place a second dish towel on top of the bag and use a mallet to break up the ice. If you’re wondering how to easily make crushed ice, simply fill a gallon zip top freezer bag about 3/4 with ice cubes, seal the bag, and place a dish towel underneath it. The smaller size of the ice pieces will help to prevent a chunky texture if your blender isn’t great at crushing ice. Crushed ice is also highly recommended if you’re working with an old or low powered blender. The less time the drink has to get melty before it hits the glass, the better. I also like to use crushed ice when making a frozen Margarita so that the cocktail blends and cools rapidly, giving the drink great, smooth texture in seconds. I like to add an extra 1/4 ounce of agave syrup (or 1/2 oz of simple syrup) to my frozen Margaritas to make sure that they’re flavorful and sweet enough. If you’ve ever made ice cream, you know that temperature affects how sweet something tastes, and that more sweetness is needed the colder the food/drink is in order for it to taste the same. Frozen Margaritas taste best with slightly more sweetener If our frozen Margarita will be more watered down and colder than a regular Margarita, we need to make sure to increase the level of sweetness. What this means is two things: a frozen Margarita is a bit more diluted than a classic, and it’s also a bit colder.ĭilution and temperature are key to making a great cocktail, so we want to consider the impact that all that blended ice will have on the end product, and adjust accordingly. That’s considerably more ice/water than we’d find in a standard marg. A frozen Margarita contains tequila (or mezcal), freshly squeezed lime juice, triple sec liqueur, an optional sweetener (more about that in a minute), and about a cup of ice. You may also enjoy my Fresh Strawberry Margaritas or Coconut Orange Blossom Margarita! What are the ingredients in a frozen Margarita?Ī frozen Margarita is only slightly different than a classic Margarita. It’s also incredibly easy to blend up any time you’re in the mood for a sweet and sour tequila slushie! The classic Frozen Margarita is one of the best ways to cool off on a hot summer day.
